The cutaways the Fox network keeps making to Hudson cheering from the Yankee Stadium stands with Jay-Z make for much better TV than the relentless shots we also get of former mayor Rudy Giuliani’s grinding his teeth and quivering with anxiety beneath his Yankees cap.

The Kate-Rod relationship has given the gossipmongers at the New York Post and TMZ a new sports ‘It’ couple to obsess on, too, besides those old married fogies Tom Brady and Giselle Bundchen. It’s even been amusing to see Kate-Rod subjected to the same panting, tried-and-true menu of speculation since they started dating in May: Is that a diamond engagement ring Hudson is wearing?! Did she get A-Rod to covert to Buddhism same as Madonna pulled him into Kabbalah? Are Kate-Rod expecting a baby? The answers: No. No. And God, no.

For all we know, the best thing Hudson has done for A-Rod hasn’t been sleeping with him. I like to think maybe she told him he was dropping his front shoulder when he swings at the breaking ball, and that’s why he went on this tear and loves her so much. That would be a great story. Let’s hear Tim McCarver or TMZ break down that.

Instead, for a change, what we have is a nice story revolving around A-Rod with an ending or meaning that’s hard to predict.

A cynic might say the hot streak A-Rod is on just underscores how the past damnations were right and the only thing stopping him all along was himself.

A fabulist might say the run that A-Rod is on is a classic tale of redemption.

A moralist might say there goes the sports world again, celebrating another jock who had to screw up to rise up.

But a die-hard Yankees fan says, Who cares? Just shut up already and let the man play.
