Wi steals CPI lead from Toms after 54 holes
May 22, 2011 - 11:25 AM ET

Charlie Wi posted a third round of 4-under-par 66, and leads the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial by a stroke over David Toms.

Wi started his round with a birdie at which point he was seven strokes off the lead held by Toms with whom he was paired. Over the next eight holes, Toms had problems finding the green, which led to three bogeys, while Wi played steady with two birdies and a bogey to make the turn three shots off the lead. On the back nine, a poor approach by Toms into the water at the par-4 14th hole led to a double bogey and the lead shrinking to a single stroke. A sudden thunderstorm halted play for almost an hour and a half. When it resumed, Wi birdied the par-3 16th while Toms couldn't find the green and missed his 15-foot par putt; the net result was a two-shot swing. Wi has nine international titles to his credit, but he will be looking for his first championship on the PGA TOUR on Sunday.
