As an intern with MSNBC you’ll have the unique opportunity to be a real part of a cable news network. What We Require
MSNBC’s Internship program offers college students the opportunity to take a first step into the broadcasting industry. MSNBC Interns are unpaid and therefore must be:
- Enrolled at an accredited four or five-year college or university.
- Able to provide proof of credit from your college or university prior to starting your assignment.
- On track to receive a bachelor or advanced degree from a college or university.
MSNBC looks for students who are committed to a career in media/broadcasting through experiences in their major studies, college clubs/organizations, prior media based internships or prior media work experience. Grade point average, community service, and leadership experience are also an important part of the total assessment of student applicants.
The student may work during the fall, spring, or Summer College semesters full-time or part-time based on student availability and department/show needs.
All Internships are located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, NY unless otherwise stated.
Newsroom Internship
Selected Intern will be part of a team and will complete tasks assigned by the Senior Producer. This candidate will work closely with the team’s Producers and will perform various Production Assistant functions such as: answering phones, logging tape, researching story ideas, printing scripts, retrieving video and working within the Digital Media Intake Dept. Knowledge of politics, history and current events is required. All interns will walk away with a good understanding as to how a LIVE newscast gets from conception to air.
Primetime Intern
Research & help work on production elements for our live talk oriented programming. Selected candidates will work with Producers to produce key elements of the show such as graphics, VO's, SOT's and scripts. Control Room experience will allow the selected candidate to gain factual knowledge of the fast paced environment. Some television experience an asset. Knowledge of politics, history and current events is required. This is an ideal position for a quick learner who is detail oriented, can handle him or herself well under pressure, and is used to juggling many tasks at once. There are several positions located in our DC Bureau for the "Primetime Intern", please specify.
Archives/Acquisitions Intern
Interns for the Archives/Acquisitions department will be part of a team monitoring and logging all video feeding into the Network. They will alert producers to "best of" video, becoming the eyes & ears of the Network. In addition, they will be searching the NBC News Archives database to find necessary historical footage or file video for producers' segments. Strong knowledge of history, politics & current events a plus. Strong research skills also desirable.
Strategic Operations Internship
Selected Intern will provide assistance in audience research, for MSNBC. Duties will include: compilation and analysis of Nielsen audience data for MSNBC & its competitors. Ideal candidate should be a self-starter and a quick learner, as well as organized and detail-oriented. Person should possess excellent interpersonal and writing skills and have an interest in the business side of television. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including: Excel, Word and PowerPoint necessary. Background in mathematics or statistics helpful.
Human Resources Internship
Selected intern will assist a team of HR recruiters and managers in bringing in and maintaining top talent at MSNBC cable. Duties will consist of assisting recruiters with research, job postings, and screening of candidates. In addition selected candidate will be exposed to and assist in the everyday functions of MSNBC’s HR team. Ideal candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office and possess excellent interpersonal and writing skills.
On-Air Graphics Internship
Intern will assist in the research and creation of graphics for all MSNBC programs. Help the artists and researchers by finding graphic elements for future use. Intern should have knowledge of basic computer skills. PhotoShop and Internet experience is a plus. Student should have an interest in electronic graphics. Interest in news and current events. Intern will get hands on experience with the latest graphics equipment and software. The Intern will observe and help to create graphics that will be used on-air.
NBC Satellite Operations Internship
Candidate should demonstrate a strong interest in Television Technical Operations and New Media. Preferably has done course work in Journalism and has interest in learning News Gathering and Transmission Techniques Needs to be familiar with Excel, Word, and Outlook Programs. Ability to function in a team environment and personal initiative is a must! The Intern will come away with a full understanding of Network News Gathering, Delivery, Integration and Distribution upon completion. Great way to make contacts, and interact with many phases of Television Production. A rare, Golden Opportunity to get hands on experience!
Technical Operations Internship
MSNBC is pleased to offer various opportunities for students to work and learn the “behind the scenes” aspects of Live Television News Production. Selected interns will be able to complete a customizable internship that focuses in one, or several, of the following areas: Editing (cuts-only, Avid, Online and Non-Linear), Studio Operations (Camera, Stage Managing, Teleprompter, Studio Lighting), Control Room Operations (Technical Director, Audio, Video, Playback, Electronic Graphics), and Remote Operations (Live Shot coordination, Satellite/Fiber feeds, field logistics). Candidate should have production course work in related areas of interest or relevant experience, and must receive academic credit for the internship. MSNBC interns will receive hands-on instruction with staff supervision.
