The U.S. Army All-American Bowl has kicked off its national selection tour. All told, over 90 of the nation’s top high school football players will be selected to compete in the nation’s premier high school football event, now celebrating it’s 10th anniversary.
Considered the nation’s top overall prospect according to Rivals.com, Seantrel Henderson was welcomed to the bowl as well. His exceptional blend of size and athletic prowess are unique, and he is a dominant presence on the offensive line. This past spring, Henderson was invited to the elite Football University training experience, where he had the opportunity to learn from NFL pros and coaches. His potential, much like his national recruitment, is limitless.
Rancho Verde star Ronald Powell, the top recruit from California and a consensus top five player in the nation, put on the black and gold U.S. Army All-American jersey after he received it from Major General Campbell. Later on that afternoon, Powell found out that his West teammate would include Lache Seastrunk, the nation’s most coveted running back out of Temple, Texas. Both Powell and Seastrunk are among the nation’s most sought after recruits, having earned elite status and both also participated this past summer in the exclusive Football University Top Gun camp in Florida.
Also, Shakim Phillips of Depaul High School in New Jersey received his U.S. Army All-American jersey from Major General Bartel in a ceremony in front of his classmates. A rangy wide receiver with hands like stick-um, Phillips recently chose to commit to Boston College after a highly-publicized courtship with a number of top schools.
Throughout the week, other players from across the nation were rolled out the red-carpet to be introduced to the nation for the game.
San Diego’s Dillon Baxter watched his game jersey parachuted to him by the Army’s elite Golden Knights jump team. A verbal commit to USC, during his junior season, Baxter rushed for 1,258 yards and 16 touchdowns, threw for 1,293 yards and 11 scores and had 150 yards and four touchdowns receiving. Baxter is judged to be one of the most elite athletes in the nation.
Whatever is in the water in Minnesota is making for some truly outstanding offensive lineman for the West squad. On Thursday, James Gjere of New Brighton had a press event at his school to receive his jersey for the bowl. Gjere is imposing at 6’7 and 275 pounds but is very athletic for his size and has terrific hands.
Byrnes High School in South Carolina is home to the “Duncan Duo” of Marcus Lattimore and Brandon Willis, who both had a ceremony to officially become U.S. Army All-Americans. Lattimore, perhaps the best running back on the East Coast, is joined by his powerful and quick teammate Willis in booking their flights to San Antonio. Both players remain highly coveted recruits who count offers from many of the top programs across the country.
The Palmetto State saw another player go “Army Strong” this week. The defensive line will have a distinctly South Carolina flavor this year for the East squad as Kelcy Quarles will join Willis at the bowl. With a body ready for college ball, Quarles is the definition of explosive and he had an impressive ceremony at Greenwood High School to commemorate his honor.
