SEATTLE - Jake Peavy is set to make his first start for the Chicago White Sox.
The team announced Tuesday that the former Cy Young winner will start on Saturday at home against the Kansas City Royals. It will be Peavy’s first start for the White Sox since they acquired the right-hander from the San Diego Padres at the trading deadline, a deal that cost them four minor leaguers.
Peavy has not pitched since injuring his right ankle in June. Peavy was hurt during a minor-league rehab assignment when he was hit on the elbow with a batted ball, delaying his White Sox debut.
Given the long layoff, Peavy warned reporters at Safeco Field not to expect him at his usual best.
“I don’t expect to be 100 percent,” said Peavy, who was 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in San Diego. “I’m not. I’m excited about getting out there and competing.”
In four starts with Triple-A Charlotte, Peavy was 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA.
“This is what we’ve been looking for for a long time,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “Since he got hit with the ball, it’s been two (more) weeks since he was supposed to be on the mound. It’s going to be interesting. I think it will be exciting.”
