Camilo Villegas was disqualified from the Hyundai Tournament of Championship for breaking Rule 23-1 in his opening round on Thursday.
Villegas attempted a bump-and-run from a swale below the 15th green. His ball didn't reach the top of the hill, and returned to a spot very near from where the Colombian chipped. However, he cleared away a small piece of grass before the ball came to rest. The rule states: "a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed." He could have assessed himself a two-stroke penalty and taken a 9, but he signed for a 7 instead, thus earning the DQ. "It was pretty obvious what happened," said Slugger White, the PGA TOUR's vice president of rules and competition. "I waited for Camilo to get here this morning. The first thing he said was, 'Am I gone?' I said, 'Well, yeah, but I'd like you to look at the tape. He said he'd like to look at the tape. He came over and saw it and knew right away." Villegas is expected to tee it up at next week's Sony Open.
