ANSWERS:

Qualifying: a. (Gaudio won the 2004 French Open and was ranked as high as No. 5; now No. 307, he lost to No. 167 Julian Reister 6-1, 7-6 (3) in U.S. Open qualifying Wednesday.)

1st Round: c. (Fish challenged a call during his first-round victory over Simon Greul at the 2006 U.S. Open. Alas, the original ruling stood, and Fish lost the point.)

2nd Round: d. (Perry won the 1936 U.S. Open, the last of his eight major championships.)

3rd Round: b and a. (Borg won 11 Grand Slam singles titles but lost U.S. Open finals in 1976, '78, '80, '81; Goolagong won seven Grand Slam singles titles but lost U.S. Open finals in 1973-76.)

4th Round: a. (Courier beat Connors 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.)

Quarterfinals: d. (Tilden's career record at the tournament was 71-7, a .910 winning percentage. He won seven titles, including six in a row from 1920-25. Five-time reigning champion Federer's winning percentage is slightly higher, .918, but he has played in only 49 matches, going 45-4, entering this year's tournament. Helen Wills Moody owns the best winning percentage for a woman at the tournament: .962, going 50-2 from 1922-33 with seven titles.)

Semifinals: b. (Evert's streak began at the 1971 U.S. Open and ended with a third-round loss at Wimbledon in 1983. She won 15 of her 18 Grand Slam singles titles during that run.)

Championship: d. (Because Ashe, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, was still an amateur, he was not allowed to collect the $14,000 prize for the men's champion. He only pocketed a $20 per diem.)
