Report: Penny granted release from Red Sox
Brad Penny - S - Boston Red Sox
Aug. 27, 2009 - 12:35 AM ET
According to the Boston Herald, Brad Penny was granted his release from the Red Sox late Wednesday night.

Penny had no interest in becoming a reliever for the Red Sox, and is now hoping to sign on with a contending team before the end of August. He had an 0-4 record and 9.11 ERA in his last five starts, but a move back to the NL did wonders for former Boston hurler John Smoltz. Perhaps Penny will get in on the magic. He was no longer needed in Beantown with Tim Wakefield back to full strength and Junichi Tazawa impressing at every turn.
