In a bit of news dripping with irony, NFL fans can order a custom Michael Vick jersey — for their dogs, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.
For $39.99 plus tax and shipping at NFLshop.com, fans can order the new Philadelphia Eagles quarterback's No. 7 jersey with the name "VICK" on the back, the Daily News said.
"Like any other player, (customers) can obtain that name and that jersey if they wish," league spokesman Greg Aiello told the Daily News. "As far as putting it on the dog product, he's working with humane societies, working to educate others on this issue, so we don't see a problem."
Up until Wednesday, fans could customize the jersey with "BAD NEWZ," the name of Vick's dogfighting operation that landed him in prison for two years.
The NFL has a list of more than 1,000 names — consisting of swear words and others deemed possibly offensive — that people are not allowed to have on their customized pet jerseys.
"That has been added to the filter of names that are inappropriate, and fans will no longer be able to customize their jerseys in that way," Aiello told the Daily News. "You can choose to purchase a Vick jersey just like any other player, but 'Bad Newz' is inappropriate for obvious reasons."
Vick signed a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Eagles less than a month after finishing his two-year prison sentence.
The NFL said that fans have been able to order customizable jerseys for dogs for more than a year for any player on all 32 teams, the Daily News said.
