2. Favre has to accept his new role as the leader of the Vikings and embrace their traditions and philosophy. He had plenty of time to make up his mind and evaluate the current coaching staff and roster, so there should be no surprises if times get tough this season.
3. Hand the ball to Adrian Peterson. The Vikings have the best running back in the NFL and he needs to be the focal point of the game plan. Peterson rushed for 1,760 yards in 2008 and should have a shot at rushing for 2,000 this season. Favre should encourage the coaching staff to develop new plays in the passing game for Peterson and ride his athletic ability all the way to the playoffs.
4. Cut down on mistakes. This will be hard to do for an aging thrower who likes to gamble, but he has to do a better job at managing the game in the red zone and especially on the road when poor weather can play a factor. He plays eight home games in the Metrodome and doesn't have to worry about the freezing cold conditions for the majority of the season. But last season, Favre made way too many mistakes, ending the season with 22 interceptions.
Arguably the one of the best quarterbacks in history is back and playing for a team that needs him more than he needs them. I applaud the Vikings for upgrading their team. They are a desperate football team that needs to win now.
Favre will be ridiculed by millions who consider him selfish and disruptive, but he loves to play and wants to compete on the highest level. I'm amazed that members of the sports media are taking this story so personally and can't come to grips with the fact that a great football player still wants to play, and make a ton of money doing so. You would all do the same thing if an NFL franchise was begging you to join their team while writing you a check for $12 million.
Welcome back, Brett, now let’s see what you got left in the tank!
