David Ross will visit concussion specialist Dr. Mickey Collins on Thursday in Pittsburgh.
Ross has been bothered by post-concussion symptoms since mid-May and was officially placed back on the disabled list on Tuesday night. He is out indefinitely.
Red Sox agreed to terms with first-round pick LHP Trey Ball.
Ball, the No. 7 overall pick in this Monday's First-Year Player Draft, took his physical Monday and the signing is expected to be made official Wednesday. The 18-year-old southpaw is expected to sign for less than the $3.246 million recommended slot value for the pick.
According to Alex Speier of WEEI.com, the Red Sox will officially sign first-round left-hander Trey Ball on Wednesday.
Ball, who was selected No. 7 overall in this month's First-Year Player Draft, was in Boston on Monday to take his physical. No word yet on the exact amount of his bonus, but he's expected to sign for less than the $3.246 million recommended slot value.
Red Sox optioned RHP Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Aceves pitched well again in a spot start Tuesday, but the Sox needed him just for that outing. He'll be back later this summer.
Red Sox manager John Farrell said Andrew Bailey remains the team's closer for now, "but there's work to do."
Bailey blew his third save of the season Tuesday and has allowed five runs over his last four appearances. He has a little more leash, but his owners would be wise to pick up Junichi Tazawa as insurance.
Felix Doubront fired eight scoreless innings, guiding the Red Sox to a 3-1 defeat of the Rays in the second half of Tuesday's doubleheader at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox won the first game on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 5-1 and are now 2 1/2 games up in the American League East standings. Doubront was brilliant, needing only 93 pitches to work through his eight frames. He struck out six, issued no walks and gave up just three hits. The left-hander will take a 4.38 ERA into his next start in Detroit. We wouldn't expect a similar set of results there.
Jonny Gomes hit a walkoff two-run homer as the Red Sox rallied to beat the Rays on Tuesday night.
Boston also won the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader with Tampa Bay. Gomes did not play in that earlier game and had not managed a hit through his first three at-bats when he came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. The rest, as they say, is history.
