Story contradicts earlier talk that star promised Ariza he would stay

LeBron James can become a free agent after next season.

LeBron James didn't tell then-free agent Trevor Ariza that he would remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers past 2010, ESPN reported, contradicting an earlier story that the Cavs star had promised he'd remain with the team.

Ariza spurned the Cavs for the Houston Rockets, although it doesn't become official until the contract is signed. No contracts can be officially signed until Wednesday.

An earlier report said James, who can become a free agent in 2010, had said he would not be leaving Cleveland.

Ariza considered James' comment a recruiting tool and didn't put much stock in the comment, ESPN reported.

James couldn't be reached for comment, ESPN reported. The Cavaliers star has yet to commit publicly to returning to Cleveland.
