Don't expect Plaxico Burress or Michael Vick on a football field anytime soon.
According to a Yahoo! Sports report, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is leaning toward "indefinitely suspending" Burress, and "continuing to sideline" Vick. The story cited "three sources with knowledge of the situations."
Goodell has maintained a tough stance on players who get in trouble off the field. Earlier this month, he suspended wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth after the Cleveland Brown pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter in an incident that killed a Miami man in March.
Vick is scheduled to be released on July 20 after serving 20 months for his role in a dog-fighting ring. The report said that Vick would not be allowed to play this season.
“[Vick] is not just walking out one day and playing again,” the source close to Vick told Yahoo. “I don’t know if he understands that yet, but that’s what it looks like right now if you really pay attention. … Yeah, he served his time, but he has to prove himself. When the commissioner talks about wanting to see remorse, he’s not kidding.”
Burress, the former Giants wide receiver who accidentally shot himself in the leg at a nightclub in November, has yet to be indicted on gun charges. But Burress' lawyer Benjamin Brafman told Yahoo that the slow development of the case might not keep Burress from being punished by the league.
According to the report, Goodell is irritated that Burress has refused to accept jail time as part of a plea bargain in the case.
“The commissioner would rather have the prosecutors take some action before he does anything, but he’s prepared to do something regardless if he has to,” a league source told Yahoo.
