AP fileThe NHL reportedly is planning a second outdoor game for Jan. 1, 2010, although the competition committee must approve it Thursday.
The back end of the doubleheader would be hosted by the Flames in Calgary's McMahon Stadium, ESPN reported. The opponent figures to be one of the other five Canadian-based franchises.
But Paul Kelly, the NHLPA executive director, said he thinks having two games would "kind of water down the special quality and nature of the event," ESPN reported.
Kelly expects the competition committee to vote again the second game, ESPN reported.
"I will tell you that last year when the competition committee met this issue came up and all five players and, in fact, all voting members of both sides of the fence did not support a second Winter Classic game," Kelly said, ESPN reported.
The first half of the Winter Classic probably will be hosted by the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park, the report said.
This will be the league's third outdoor event on New Year's Day. In 2008, the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at a snowy Ralph Wilson Stadium. Earlier this year, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings skated at Wrigley Field.
Ryan Callahan scored three goals as the New York Rangers beat Philadelphia 5-2 on Saturday for their seventh straight win over the Flyers.
