Rookie Derek Lamely rode a bogey-free, 6-under-par 33-33=66 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Open to a two-stroke victory in the third edition of the fledgling tournament.
Lamely's 19-under 269 shatters the old tournament record by five strokes. He's the first rookie to win on the PGA Tour since Marc Turnesa broke through at the 2008 Timberlake Open and the first guy out of the Q School/Nationwide Tour reshuffle category to win since Y.E. Yang at the '09 Honda Classic. Lamely is also the first winner to start his final round on the 10th tee since Keith Clearwater at the 1987 Colonial. Lamely's feat became possible when he set the course record (63) at Trump International in the third round and golfers were not re-paired for the final 18. The rookie is now exempt via the Winners category (#9) through 2012 and earns a berth into this year's PGA Championship. He started today as the seventh alternate for this week's Transitions Championship, but he is now in the field.
