Rams’ sale unlikely to benefit NFL’s L.A. hopes

Until city builds enticing stadium, teams won’t consider heading west

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum isn't a suitable stadium to lure an NFL team to Los Angeles, writes Dan Pompei.

Q: Hey Dan, which rookie will have the biggest impact next season? I’m excited the Vikings are adding plays for Percy Harvin.
Jason Sinclair., Tempe, Ariz.

A: Harvin is going to be very interesting to watch. It would not surprise me to see him make an impact on a similar level to the impact made by Tennessee’s Chris Johnson last year. They both are gadget players capable of doing more than one thing.

But if I had to choose one guy right now, I’d pick Donald Brown of the Colts. He is an NFL-ready running back who can run, catch and block. The system in Indianapolis is perfectly suited to his skills. And he is surrounded by greatness.

The only way I could see him not standing out is if he doesn’t get enough opportunities.

Q: As a longtime Dallas Cowboy fan (my oldest son, 18, is named Dallas), I'm concerned about the upcoming season and having Mr. Staypuff Marshmallow Man still in charge of the team. If you were Jerry Jones, who would you hire to run the team and why? Reporters down in Dallas claim that if Wade doesn't get it done this year, that will also indict Jason Garrett, so a new head coach would be brought in, and that it is most likely Mike Shanahan. Would that be your choice? Or would you go for Mike Holmgren or John Gruden? Bill Cowher? Someone else?
Steve Waddell, Hampton Roads, Va.

A: Remember, the pendulum almost always swings far in the other direction. So the Cowboys went from disciplinarian Bill Parcells to laid back Wade Phillips.

Their next move, assuming Wade fails, likely will be to another coach who demands his players stand at attention and salute when he walks in the room. Mike Holmgren probably fits that description best from the out of work coaches club.

All of those former coaches would be good hires, but I think Holmgren might be best suited for the Cowboys. He also could help run the personnel end of the business, which he has made it clear he would like to do.

Q: Dan....who has complimented their offensive line the most in the offseason. Which team stands to bolster the running game heading into pre season???
Robert Lanoue, Palm Harbor, Fla.

A: Four teams’ offensive line additions stand out.

The Rams added a pair of gifted blockers in Jason Smith and Jason Brown. The Ravens replaced Smith with a player who they are very excited about, Matt Birk, and then drafted Michael Oher. The Jaguars brought in a bookend combination in Tra Thomas and Eugene Monroe. And the Bears signed Orlando Pace, Frank Omiyale and Kevin Shaffer.

As far as which team looks ready to run the ball better, take a look at the Eagles. In addition to adding Jason Peters and Stacy Andrews up front, they also drafted LeSean McCoy.

And given what the Cardinals had last year, they should be much better with Beanie Wells carrying the rock.

Q: How much do NFL refs make?
— Chris K., Blacksburg, Va.

A: It depends on their experience level. Regular-season fees last year ranged from $3,000 per game to $8,300 per game, depending on years of service. So the least experienced refs made $51,000 over 17 weeks, and the most experienced made $141,100.
