Ordinary Joes forever connected by success

Torre, Girardi win with different styles. Is a World Series matchup on tap?

Joe Torre, left, and Joe Girardi, shown in 2005, will forever be linked to each other.

Torre used to get credit for the no-panic, all-business atmosphere he cherished. But now the guys who used to play for him are saying it was too much business under Torre and not enough fun. Girardi, who was supposed to be the martinet, has allowed the players to bring their kids into the clubhouse and has even let them play music there — both no-nos under Torre. Once the Yanks started winning, they started pelting each other with shaving-cream pies and even started a kangaroo court. And Girardi thought it was all pretty cool.

In Los Angeles, Torre is still getting credit for his businesslike approach to the game. It worked once in New York, and now it’s working in L.A. The proof of Torre’s pudding came when Manny Ramirez was suspended for 50 games for violating the league’s drug policy.

Ramirez was merely the Dodgers best player. Losing him was like one wheel off a bicycle. There was no way the team was going to be able to carry on without him.

They lost a few games after he left, but when Torre never panicked, the Dodgers didn’t either. Instead of falling back, they’ve been the best team in baseball and have built an eight-game lead in the perennially weak NL West. It may only be June, but that’s looking insurmountable.

Just a month ago, at least one writer in New York was lobbying for the return of Torre to the Bronx. That would have been a mistake, although it wasn’t clear then if Girardi was the answer, either.

You don’t hear that anymore. Instead, people are writing about what a breath of fresh air and fun Girardi has been, and how great it is the Yankees have him. In L.A., the buzz is all about how Torre’s Yoda-like calm has brought greatness — and excitement — back to Chavez Ravine.

It’s only June, but right now, the managerial changes are working out as well as anyone on either team could have hoped. If they keep it up, it won’t be long before you hear the distant drumbeat for a Yankees-Dodgers, Torre-Girardi World Series.
