A knee injury running back Jamal Woodyard suffered in the Hawaii Bowl requires multiple surgeries and he will miss the 2012 season.
The injury requires two surgeries performed at different times and Woodyard will need a year to rehab. As a redshirt freshman in 2012, the bruising back was a major contributor to a Southern Miss rushing attack that ranked 20th nationally. Woodyard ran for 732 yards at a robust 6.7 per tote. New coach Ellis Johnson has a strong stable of RBs, including three others that topped 400 yards last season.
Jameis Winston, the nation's top quarterback recruit, officially signed with Florida State on Friday.
Some folks in Tallahassee were getting a little concerned that Winston did not sign with FSU on Wednesday. Any such concerns were laid to rest Friday. The two-sport star (baseball) was Alabama's Gatorade Player of the Year in 2011. Winston threw for 2,424 yards, ran for 1,063 and accounted for 43 touchdowns for Hueytown High.
Prized running back Johnathan Gray made his nearly year-long committment to Texas official.
It was anticlimactic, but Gray officially became a Longhorn on Wednesday. The Gatorade national player of the year and UT's top-rated recruit committed last April. The holder of several national rushing records, Gray concluded his career at Aledo (Texas) High School with 10,908 rushing yards and a record 205 touchdowns on the ground.
Four-star receiver Deontay Greenbery chooses Houston after planning to sign with Notre Dame.
The change of heart shocked many. Rated No. 46 overall (No. 7 WR) by Scout.com, Greenbury set California state single-season receiving records for yards (2,165) and touchdowns (33). Greenberry has a football-playing cousin that enrolled at Notre Dame this winter.
Nelson Agholor, one of the state of Florida's top recruits, signed with USC.
Agholor, listed as a top-50 player on many boards, was a running back (1,983 yards last season) at Berkley Prep in Tampa. He will be a receiver at USC, where he follows in the footsteps of Robert Woods, Marqise Lee and George Farmer when it comes to wideouts from the Sunshine State who chose to go cross country to SoCal.
Tennessee signed receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, regarded by multiple services as the top JUCO talent in the country.
Patterson was coveted by virtually every major program because of his size (6-3, 200) and speed (4.4 in 40). At Hutchinson CC in Kansas, he caught 61 passes for 924 yards and 13 touchdowns. Three of Patterson's 10 kick returns resulted in TDs and he avearged 151 all-purpose yards per game with 22 total TDs.
Receiver Thomas Johnson, rated a four-star recruit by multiple services, signed with Texas A&M.
The Dallas product committed to Texas a year ago, but opted for the Aggies. Johnson, who possess what has been described as explosive speed, was rated as the third-best WR prospect in the country by at least one service following a season in which he caught 59 passes for 1,077 yards and 13 TDs.
