Determined Rockets catch Lakers napping

Kobe and L.A. must wake up soon to beat tough, gritty Houston team

Lakers star Kobe Bryant walks down the court during Monday's game against Houston.

“In the four games this season, they always beat us in the fourth quarter,” Yao said afterward. “This time we prepare better for the fourth quarter.”

The Lakers weren’t foiled solely by a better fourth-quarter Houston effort. They were flat for almost the entire night. It was a stark contrast to the visiting Rockets, who came in amid predictions in some quarters of a series sweep by L.A.

“Everybody came in with a very active attitude,” Yao said of his mates. “Everybody played very unselfish.”

Rockets coach Rick Adelman is an old hand at dealing with Laker mystique. He had to deal with it during his days with the Sacramento Kings, when that club seemed forever bewitched by Shaq, Kobe, Phil and the gang.

This time, he wouldn’t let his charges accept the doomsday scenarios, and he doesn’t seem inclined to let them do so on Wednesday night and beyond, either.

“They came in with the right attitude,” Adelman said. “They came in aggressive.

“Our guys are very determined.”

Conventional wisdom had the Lakers losing one game of this series. And so far, that prognostication is correct. But if they continue to approach the challenge of facing the Rockets as if they just rolled off the futon after a long day at the beach, they’ll lose more games, and maybe the series if they’re not careful.

“I think it’ll be interesting to see how we progress,” Bryant said.

One interesting footnote from Yao: “I just learned the word ‘underdog’ the other day.”

As for the Lakers, maybe it would be a good time to learn the word “favorite.”
