Who’s happy, and who’s worried after draft?

McNabb will love Eagles’ new weapons, while Addai may love playing time

Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb should be elated with the offensive players his team drafted, writes Dan Pompei.

Q: Who was the best quarterback not drafted? And how could teams pass on Graham Harrell and Chase Daniel?
Keith Sapp, Boulder, Colo.

A: The best quarterback not drafted in my opinion was Brian Hoyer from Michigan State.

I think he will make the Patriots’ final roster as an undrafted free agent. And who knows, he could even turn into the next Matt Cassel. I thought Hoyer was the fourth best quarterback in the draft after the three who were chosen in the first round.

I was also surprised Harrell did not get selected. He dropped because he doesn’t have great arm strength and he got the label “system quarterback.” But I think in time he can develop into a decent NFL backup.

As for Daniel, he just does not fit the NFL prototype for the position. He’s too small, his arm isn’t strong enough and he does not have a conventional playing style.

Q: Do you believe Chris Simms will have a legitimate opportunity to start in Denver? I think he has a ton of potential. In Tampa it was his misfortune to get a bad case of grudenitis.
John Klopfer, Ocala, Fla.

A: I think the Broncos are planning on Kyle Orton being their starter. I would say the only way that changes is if Orton bombs in camp and preseason and Simms plays lights out, or if Orton gets hurt.

Q: Can the Jags return to their 2007 form now that they drafted a bunch of linemen?

A: I would almost be surprised if the Jaguars did not return to their 2007 form. They are a better team than they showed last season, and I like some of the moves they made.

And what will matter most is if they can stay healthier than they did last season—their biggest problem may have been a glut of injuries on the offensive line at the start of the year.

Q: Why do you think that the NFL is thinking about expanding the season from 16 games to 18 games. Teams need the 4 preseason games to evaluate young players and to decide who they are going to cut and keep. It seems like the NFL does not know the process that NFL coaches go through each year.
Dylan David, Lakeside, Calif.

A: I respectfully disagree with your assertion that the NFL needs four preseason games to evaluate young players, Dylan. Two games is plenty of evaluation time.

Most of the evaluating goes on in practice anyway. I have mixed feelings, though, about expanding to 18 regular-season games. On one hand, I like the idea of cutting back the preseason by two games. On the other hand, I think a 16-game regular season is plenty long. So what I would really like to see is a two game preseason and a 16 game regular season. And that will never happen.
