A young basketball phenom is turning pro after his junior year -- in high school.
Jeremy Tyler, a highly touted 6-11 prospect from San Diego, has decided to skip his senior season and play professionally in Europe, The New York Times and Yahoo! Sports reported. The 17-year-old would become the first U.S.-born player to leave high school early to play professionally overseas.
"Nowadays people look to college for more off-the-court stuff versus being in the gym and getting better," Tyler told the Times. "If you're really focused on getting better, you go play pro somewhere. Pro guys will get you way better than playing against college guys."
Tyler, who had orally committed to Louisville, has not yet signed with an agent or a team, the Times reported. Tyler told the paper he was growing frustrated about playing in high school.
"It was boring and I wasn't getting better," Tyler said. "Each game was the same thing. I was getting triple-teamed and getting hacked. After each game I'd have scratches and bruises up and down my arms from getting triple-teamed. It just wasn't for me."
Tyler told the Times he has been working out at local gyms and schools and devoting time to get his high school diploma online.
Last year, Brandon Jennings became the first player to skip his freshman year of college to play professionally in Europe. After one season at Virtus Roma, Jennings is projected to be a lottery pick in June's draft.
Tyler is expected to return in two years to be eligible for the 2011 NBA draft.
