There's really nothing more to be written about the Penn-St. Pierre fight that hasn't already been said, except I wish this match was getting more attention from the sporting world. To get over 1 million pay-per-view buys as the UFC is expecting in this economic climate is a minor miracle. The UFC will likely get more eyeballs on this fight than Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao got in December, but nowhere near the press coverage. It probably won't be reported in tomorrow's newspapers; it likely will be ignored in next week's Sports Illustrated, and given the sport's current success, that is inexcusable.

In case you missed weigh-in results, Penn weighed in at 168 while St. Pierre checked in at the welterweight limit of 170.

On to the fights.

Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida

Round one: The first two minutes featured more standup than you'd expect. Guida is aware of Diaz's excellent ground work, and probably figures he's better off keeping it standing. Eventually, Diaz tried to take Guida down. Guida got full mount, but Diaz wiggled out. Guida took Diaz's back and dragged him back down. Guida lands a few punches. They return standing, and Guida slams Diaz down. Diaz tried a triangle, but Guida recognized it and pulled out before he was in danger.

Round two: Guida expended quite a bit of energy trying to take Diaz down, as they jockeyed for position against the cage. Finally, after an epic struggle, Diaz scored a trip takedown, but Guida was able to quickly take Diaz's back. Guida got a takedown late and Diaz tried another triangle, but Guida is on to his tricks. Most of the round was Guida grinding Diaz against the cage and keeping him in places he could control the action.

Round three: Diaz is scoring from the outside as he utilizes his reach advantage, but he needs to finish. Guida holds him against the fence to wear him down, then takes him down. Diaz tries another triangle, but Guida pulls out again. Guida will likely win a decision by controlling the action, but he did little damage.

Winner: Guida by split-decision

Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun-Kim

Round one: Kim scored the early takedown of Parisyan. Kim took his back and tried for the rear naked choke, but Parisyan defended. Kim eventually tried an arm bar but Parisyan escaped. Kim then tried a triangle. Karo escaped and ended up on top. Kim had an excellent round controlling action.

Round two: Parisyan is a little more aggressive to start the round, outscoring Kim on their feet. But Kim gets a trip takedown. Parisyan almost got an Americana off a scramble, but Kim just escaped. Parisyan got the takedown of Kim again but isn't able to do much with it. Parisyan doesn't seem himself.

Round three: Trip takedown for Kim early. I have nothing else to say about the round. They basically fought for positioning against the cage for the last 3:30. There were about three punches thrown in the round, and the judges will have a tough time picking a winner. It's safe to say this will not be getting the Fight of the Night bonus.

Winner: Karo Parisyan by split-decision

Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones

Round one: Jones came out again with unorthodox striking as he showed in his debut, with a spinning back kick. Jones scored a nice trip-takedown, then another, just rag-dolling him around. They go back to standing. Jones scores the suplex takedown. Jones scored a back elbow that hurt Bonnar badly, then scored on the ground. Jones later scored with a knee to the head. Big round for Jones, who I picked as an upset winner.

Round two: Jones picking him apart again. Jones is evolving before our eyes. Bonnar is getting dominated. Jones gets half-mount and controls Bonnar on the ground. Bonnar finds his way up but eats a knee for his troubles. Think about this: Jones has been fighting professionally for less than a year, and is fighting a guy who has been fighting since '01, and Jones is dominating the action. This guy could be the future.

Round three: Bonnar surprisingly went for the clinch early; not a good idea against a wrestler. Of course, Bonnar is able to do little. Jones eventually takes Bonnar down. Bonnar tries a triangle, but Jones easily escapes. With 1:30 left, they go back to their feet. Bonnar tries to get it to the ground where he feels he has a jiu-jitsu advantage, but is not able to. Jones looks tired, but lasts the round and probably wins a decision.

Winner: Jon Jones by unanimous decision

Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva

Round one: Machida looking good early, but hit Silva with a low blow, necessitating a timeout. Silva takes his time and they restart. Seconds after, Machida scores the footsweep takedown. Machida hurt him with a knee and a straight left. Silva fell backwards and Machida dove into his guard. Machida wasn't able to do much. Machida got up and kicked at Silva's legs before falling back into Silva's guard. Machida stunned Silva again with another straight right. Wow, at the bell, Machida trips him to the ground and lands a perfect overhand right that puts Silva out. The punch landed a split-second before the bell landed, and Silva was unconcious and couldn't get up. If he had gotten up, he would've been saved by the bell, but he was out.

Winner: Machida by KO

And finally, it's time...

BJ Penn vs. Georges St. Pierre

Round one: St. Pierre stifling Penn early, putting him against the fence and making Penn feel his weight. St. Pierre tried a takedown, but Penn shows his crazy takedown defense hopping off one foot. St. Pierre holds on to it for a while, but is never able to complete it, and they return to standing. GSP tries another takedown, but Penn again resists. GSP lands a left jab and an overhand right with one minute left. GSP looks livelier than Penn early.

Round two: Penn ramping up the aggressiveness with a jab and cross early in the round. GSP races in for the clinch. GSP scores the takedown one minute in. St. Pierre scores with a short elbow from inside BJ's guard. Then adds a big left. He passes guard to side control and peppers punches from the top. GSP with a knee to the ribs. BJ gets it back to guard, but GSP postures up and lands punches from the top. GSP landing from the top but BJ holds on. Big round for GSP.

Round three: GSP with the lead jab once, then twice early. GSP takes him down again and moves to half-guard. GSP with punches from the top until Penn gets it back to full-guard. Penn gets up and tries for a takedown of his own, but GSP resists. After a stalemate, GSP hits a double-leg takedown. GSP throws shots from the top, and BJ just eats them. GSP wins the round, but can't finish. It must be frustrating, but he also knows he's winning the fight.

Round four: GSP lands jabs early, then another takedown. Penn is getting battered as GSP is almost playing with him, passing guard, moving to half-mount and side-mount. GSP is moving from position to position at will. Penn looks done and will need a minor miracle to win this fight. GSP is throwing strikes from the top, and hammers away for the last minute trying to finish. Penn is crazy tough but taking a hellacious beating. In between rounds, Penn's corner stops the fight.

Winner: St. Pierre by TKO

A quick note to pass along that isn't UFC-related...

Belfort still under Affliction
A couple days ago, ESPN.com reported on its excellent MMA Live show that middleweight Vitor Belfort is a free agent, which led to speculation that he could end up back in the UFC. Affliction president Tom Atencio told me that is incorrect, and Belfort is still under contract to Affliction, so don't expect to see "the Phenom" anywhere but in Affliction's ring next time out. Belfort had a spectacular knockout of Matt Lindland in last week's event.

The next page contains undercard results which may or may not be televised on the pay-per-view, time permitting, so don't click ahead if you want to be surprised.
