NEW YORK - Scott Boras took a tour of Citi Field and sat down for lunch Wednesday with top executives from the New York Mets.
Next, the Mets hope they can lure one of Boras’ high-profile free agents to their new ballpark, too.
Hoping to fill a hole in the rotation, New York is interested in a pair of free-agent pitchers represented by Boras: right-hander Derek Lowe and lefty Oliver Perez.
The Mets have offered Lowe a contract worth about $36 million over three years. They’ve also talked with Boras about a potential deal for Perez, who spent the past two seasons in New York’s starting rotation.
Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, general manager Omar Minaya and assistant GM John Ricco met Wednesday with Boras and Mike Fiore, a member of the agent’s staff. Wilpon gave the group a tour of Citi Field but the Mets were otherwise tightlipped about the meeting, with spokesman Jay Horwitz saying only that Boras’ clients were discussed.
Boras also represents free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez, who would seem a good fit for the Mets in left field because of his power from the right side of the plate. But the team hasn’t shown much interest in Ramirez, at least not publicly.
Boras was in New York this week for Mark Teixeira’s news conference Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
Adding a starting pitcher is a priority for the Mets. They also offered a contract to right-hander Tim Redding and are interested in lefty Randy Wolf.
The Mets are moving this year into $800 million Citi Field, still under construction adjacent to Shea Stadium.
