Abdul-Jabbar managing his illness
Nov. 15: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wants to be very clear that his cancer was caught early and that he's not dealing with a death sentence.

As for the other 2010 possibilities, we offer a look at their situations and quick thoughts.

Tracy McGrady: The Rockets guard will be coming off a $22.3 million final contract season.

Considering McGrady's injury history (and lack of playoff history), teams will be wary of the per-game payout on any deal.

Joe Johnson: The Hawks guard will be coming off a $15 million final contract season.

Could be the consolation prize for those who covet Kobe.

Amare Stoudemire: The Suns forward has an opt-out from the $17.7 million in 2010-11 that otherwise would stand as the final season on his contract.

He could be the consolation prize for those who crave Bosh.

Manu Ginobili: The Spurs guard will be coming off a $10.7 million final contract season.

How many pieces will the fearless lefty be in by then?

Shaquille O'Neal: The Suns center will be coming off a $21 million final contract season.

How much of a pay cut will pride allow?

Jermaine O'Neal: The Raptors center will be coming off a $23 million final contract season.

Unlike with Shaq, pride won't get in the way, with the next deal starting in the seven figures.

Tyson Chandler: The Hornets center has an opt-out from the $13.2 million in 2010-11 that otherwise would stand as the final season on his contract.

He could stand as Part B for a team that lands a scorer as its primary free-agent target.

Udonis Haslem: The Heat forward will be coming off a $7.1 million final contract season.

Another supporting type who could pick up the leftovers after a prime free-agent is added.

Carlos Boozer: The Jazz forward will be coming off a $12.7 million final contract season, unless he invokes his opt-out in 2009.

The Dukie is no fool. He'll take the money when it's available in 2009.

Hedo Turkoglu: The Magic forward will be coming off a $7.4 million final contract season, unless he invokes his opt-out in 2009.

Figure on an approach similar to Boozer's.

Michael Redd: The Bucks guard has an opt-out from the $18.3 million in 2010-11 that otherwise would stand as the final season on his contract.

No way he opts out of what certainly will stand as the largest salary of his career.

Richard Jefferson: The Bucks forward has an opt-out from the $15 million in 2010-11 that otherwise would stand as the final season on his contract.

See Michael Redd.

Josh Howard:
The Mavericks forward has an opt-out from the $11.8 million in 2010-11 that otherwise would stand as the final season on his contract.

Perhaps by then he gets his act in order.

Peja Stojakovic: The Hornets forward has an opt-out from the $14.3 million in 2010-11 that otherwise would stand as the final season on his contract.

He'll take the guaranteed money and run out the final year on his deal.

Mehmet Okur: The Jazz center will be coming off a $9 million final contract season.

By then, teams will figure out that perhaps a center should rebound, block shots and step into the paint every now and then.

Brad Miller: The Kings center will be coming off a $12.3 million final contract season.

Sort of an Okur without the passport.

Kenyon Martin: The Nuggets forward has an opt-out from the $16.5 million in 2010-11 that otherwise would stand as the final season on his contract.

Will he still be in one piece by then?

Marcus Camby: The Clippers forward will be coming off a $9.7 million final contract season.

Exactly what is the value of a free agent who once was traded for nothing?
