The New York Yankees are willing to increase their offer to free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia to $150 million if the Los Angeles Angels make their own offer to Sabathia, Newsday reported for Thursday's editions.

The paper, citing an unnamed "person familiar with the situation," reported that the club is ready to sweeten its offer if necessary. New York made an initial offer, reportedly six years and about $140 million, to Sabathia last week. Newsday reported the $150 million figure without citing a source.

The Angels and Milwaukee Brewers would seem to be the Yankees' main competition for Sabathia at this point, with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly on the periphery. The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that the Angels are prepared to make an offer to Sabathia now that their negotiations with free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira have stalled.

Yankees officials are concerned that Sabathia, a California native, would be amenable to taking slightly less money from a club in his home state, and therefore willing to sweeten their offer.

If the Yankees fail to sign Sabathia, they likely would turn their attention to free-agent righthanders Derek Lowe and, possibly, A.J. Burnett as they try to help fill their starting pitching needs.
