The Yankees aren't going as crazy on this one as they did for CC Sabathia, but they are getting ready to offer Blue Jays righthander A.J. Burnett a healthy salary, likely about $80 million over five years. Also, the spies whisper the Yanks will be going after Derek Lowe, too.

If the Yankees get Lowe, that would give Pedro Martinez a better chance to finish his career with the Mets, which his agent says the future Hall of Famer would prefer. Martinez is 37 and definitely not ready to retire, says agent Fernando Cuza. His best fit with the Mets would be No. 4 in the rotation, and the team has been eyeing Lowe for that spot.

Last Friday, the first day of the free-agent season, the Yankees offered former AL Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia a six-year contract worth $140 million, according to the New York Times.

That would exceed Johan Santana's $137.5 million, six-year contract with the New York Mets both in total and average.

Sabathia went a combined 17-10 for Cleveland and Milwaukee this season after winning the 2007 AL Cy Young Award.
