PORTSMOUTH, England - A week before she defends her New York Marathon title, Paula Radcliffe shrugged off her Olympic flop by easily winning the 10-mile (16-kilometer) Great South Run in a fast time on Sunday.
A disappointing 23rd in Beijing in August, Radcliffe finished in a national best 51 minutes, 11 seconds on a flat road race course in her first race since the Olympics.
The 34-year-old British runner showed no effects of the stress fracture to her left hip and the calf injuries that ruined her preparations for Beijing. Winner of seven of the eight marathons she has completed, Radcliffe is the world record holder for that distance and will go for her third NYC Marathon victory on Nov. 2.
"The only thing to recover from in Beijing was that I wasn't in shape,'' said Radcliffe, who took 30 seconds off the previous national record set 17 years ago by Jill Boltz.
"I hadn't done enough running. I think I've done a bit more now and I felt more confident standing on the start line because you know you've done the preparations,'' Radcliffe said. "At the Olympic Games I wasn't prepared and just had to get on with it. I just wanted to use today to have to have a good blowout.''
Radcliffe said she deliberately slowed down in the wet and windy conditions to save something for next weekend's race in New York.
"I didn't want to really totally hammer it, because I've a more important race next week,'' she said. "I felt good running it ... When I finished my legs felt OK and I just didn't want to give everything today.''
Portugal's Jessica Augusto held off the challenge of Magdalene Mukunzi of Kenya to finish second in 53:15.
Kenya's Bernard Kipyego won the men's race in 46:42, well ahead of Ireland's Martin Fagan and defending champion Luke Kibet.
