No. 8 Texas Tech might use fan-turned-kicker

Williams won spot on team after winning haltime contest last month

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's kicking situation has gone from troubling to downright hilarious.

The No. 8-ranked Red Raiders are considering using a fan who won a halftime contest as their kicker for Saturday's game against No. 19 Kansas.

Matt Williams, a transfer from Tarleton State will be considered to kick extra points and field goals this week. Williams joined the team a week after kicking a 30-yard field goal during halftime of a game against UMass on September 20.

"They relayed a message to me saying that coach (Mike) Leach wanted to talk to me," Williams told RedRaiderSports.com the next day. "He told me to come into his office on Tuesday and talk to him, and then (special teams) coach (Clay) McGuire told me to come and speak with him on Monday."

Williams attempted to walk-on at Tarleton State, but never kicked. He was granted a one-time transfer exemption on Monday.

"He's had three or four weeks now to get back in shape," McGuire said. "He's doing a good job. He's a confident kid. He's real smooth. He's looked good so far."

McGuire said the choice between freshman Donnie Carona and Williams will be made based on how they look in practice. The Red Raiders obviously feel Williams can't be any worse than what they've seen from their kickers thus far.

Tech Tech has missed six extra points, and has had seven placement kicks blocked this season. Carona is 3-for-7 on field goals and was replaced last week by senior Cory Fowler. However, Fowler had two extra points blocked - and one returned
for two points - in a 43-25 victory at Texas A&M on Saturday.
