DALLAS - Suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones will begin alcohol treatment Thursday, according to a published report.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday announced an indefinite suspension for Jones following an alcohol-related incident at a local hotel that resulted in hotel employees calling police.
Citing a source, The Dallas Morning News reported this morning that Jones will begin his league-imposed treatment program Thursday. The source also told the newspaper that the troubled 25-year-old will undergo treatment at an undisclosed location in the Dallas area.
Goodell said earlier his week that Jones would be suspended for at least four games, calling his actions a "continuation of a disturbing pattern of behavior and clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL."
Jones was suspended for the entire 2007 season for multiple violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy and had to apply for reinstatement - which the league granted with conditions — before joining the Cowboys this season.
According to a Dallas police report, Jones was involved in a bathroom scuffle with his bodyguard, Tommy Jones, at a hotel in Dallas, Texas last week.
Police said they received a call from the Joule Hotel at about 11 p.m. on October 7 and that there was "a disturbance between two black males and a black female arguing and fighting at the location and that the suspects were in the lobby."
Since alcohol was involved in this latest incident, Jones' actions violated terms of his reinstatement. He will be able to apply for reinstatement after missing four games.
The NFL said a decision on whether Adam Jones can return to play will be based on his strict compliance with treatment plans established by the NFL and Cowboys. Jones' progress will be evaluated by Goodell on an on-going basis.
