AP6. The other team in Utah
Many believe Utah, not BYU, is the best non-BCS team in the state of Utah. The Utes roll into Laramie this weekend, facing a reeling team that can't get out of its own way and can't choose a quarterback.
And you know what? This thing screams upset.
Utah is coming off an emotional win over Oregon State, and a cold front is expected to move through the front range and bring freezing rain and "light accumulations" of snow. It's the perfect storm of adversity.
That, or the Cowboys increase their NCAA-worst negative-19 turnover ratio.
7. Back to reality
Ah, a lovely trip to Starkville. The drive to the middle of nowhere, the best barbeque in the south, and those annoying, aggravating cowbells.
And an unbeaten team coming to town for another big SEC game. Admit it, you wouldn't be surprised in the least of Vanderbilt didn't win another game this season.
The schedule: at Mississippi State, at Georgia, Duke, Florida, at Kentucky, Tennessee, at Wake Forest.
Look, I'm as impressed as the next guy with Vandy's 5-0 start, but does anyone really think the Commodores can compete with any SEC heavyweight not sporting an offensive coordinator named Franklin?
The Bulldogs play solid defense, and walk-on quarterback Tyson Lee won't make mistakes. Nice having you around, Vandy.
8. Tough Trojan
It now appears as though USC quarterback Mark Sanchez will start against Arizona State. This is good for two reasons:
1. Sanchez bounces back quickly from yet another knee injury.
2. SEC fan can't taunt USC about playing with Arkansas castoffs.
9. Hey, Fiesta!
While you were watching the SEC and USC and all those terrific quarterbacks in the Big 12, the team in South Bend that everyone loves to hate has quietly won four of five games to begin the season.
And now we have this: with a win at North Carolina, Notre Dame is headed to a BCS bowl — like it or not. The schedule is favorable and, frankly, the Irish offense is beginning to find its stride because QB Jimmy Clausen is embracing the beauty that is checking down to secondary receivers and purposely throwing incompletions.
All that said, North Carolina has more athletes and more speed on defense than Michigan State, and the Irish struggled mightily against the Spartans.
10. T.P. is no V.Y.
Now I've heard it all. Terrelle Pryor is drawing comparisons to Vince Young.
Deep breath, everyone. I'd look like Young against the Purdue defense, and let's not be so quick to compare a freshman to, I don't know, the best player in the sport's modern era.
That said, Pryor is a better thrower than Young at this point in both of their college careers. For whatever that's worth.
