•The on-again, off-again relationship between Penn State and Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard defensive end Jason Ankrah apparently is back on again after Ankrah took an unofficial visit to Happy Valley last weekend. Apparently, Nittany Lions coaches didn’t want to take a commitment from Ankrah a few weeks ago because they felt it would eliminate them from contention for New Jersey defensive end Anthony LaLota. But now that LaLota — from The Hun School in Princeton, N.J. — has committed to Michigan, Penn State is back on Ankrah. Michigan, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and Clemson are others in the mix.

•Sanford (Fla.) Seminole wide receiver Andre Debose was suspended for one game and missed his team’s contest against Orlando Dr. Phillips. Debose missed a class to get to FSU’s Sept. 13 home game against Wake Forest early. While risking a suspension to get to Tallahassee early certainly speaks to Debose’s interest in FSU, the Seminoles’ offense looked awful in a 12-3 loss. With LSU pushing hard (Debose and Seminole teammates Dyron Dye and Ray Ray Armstrong took unofficial visits to Baton Rouge this past weekend) and Florida, Miami, Georgia and USC in the hunt for official visits as well, FSU’s passing game needs some serious work to keep Debose’s interest.

•Is Ohio State back in the market for a safety? The Buckeyes have been in touch with four-star safety Vladimir Emilien of Plantation (Fla.) High because, sources say, there are some potential off-field issues with Buckeyes commitment Bradley McDougald. The Buckeyes are hoping McDougald — from Dublin (Ohio) Scioto — will be a part of their 2009 recruiting class, but contact with Emilien shows there is concern.

•Some 2010 notes: While Greensboro (N.C.) Northern Guilford athlete Keenan Allen took an unofficial visit to Penn State this past weekend and came away with an offer, Alabama clearly remains the team to beat. … Defensive back Khiry McQuay of Tampa Hillsborough has received an offer from Nebraska, his first official offer. … While Boston College has only five commitments for its 2009 recruiting class, the Eagles are off to a strong start for 2010 with a commitment from linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis of Stamford (Conn.) King Low Heywood Thomas this past weekend.
