HOUSTON - The Cincinnati Reds think instant replay didn’t work Tuesday night.

Umpires turned to replays to review a long drive by Cincinnati’s Joey Votto, then upheld their call that it was not a home run in the seventh inning of the Reds’ 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros.

Votto’s fly hit the top of the wall in right. Umps checked to see whether the ball bounced straight back or hit an empty seat before bounding onto the field.

Umpire crew chief Gary Darling said the replays didn’t show them enough to call it a home run.

“There were two looks we had,” Darling said. “Neither one gave us clear or convincing evidence of other than what we had on the field.”

Reds manager Dusty Baker knows what he heard.

“The problem was (the replay) wasn’t in HD,” he said. “So they went back to New York and looked at it there. I think the local TV had a better look at it.

“I knew I heard two sounds. It hit something. He (the umpire) told me he didn’t hear it hit. They (Reds players) said it looked like it hit the metal arm rest of a chair.”

Darling declined to say whether an HD replay could have made a difference.

“The guys were giving us the feeds,” Darling said. “They gave us the two feeds that we had.”

Votto, who wound up with a single, thought he heard two sounds of the ball hitting the top of the fence and then hitting a chair before rebounding on the field.

“It sounded like it,” Votto said. “Apparently there’s a pole behind the top yellow pole. They said they thought it hit that.”

It was the fourth time this year that replay has been used — only one call was reversed, with Tampa Bay’s Carlos Pena getting a home run.

This was the second replay call at Minute Maid Park. Hunter Pence’s double was confirmed against Pittsburgh on Sept. 9.
