Jacksonville Jaguars
The news continues to get worse for a team that I thought would easily be a lock for a wild card spot before the start of the season. The offensive line has been decimated by injuries so Chris Naeole was signed earlier in the weak to add some depth to a running game that has disappeared. Fred Taylor has only 23 rushing attempts after two weeks and is averaging 2.9 yards per carry and Jacksonville's 27th ranked offense has receivers who are banged up and can't hang on to the ball. This team is too good to roll over but with upcoming games at Indianapolis, Houston, and Pittsburgh and at Denver before their bye week, a sense of urgency should be the battle cry for Jack Del Rio and his entire coaching staff.
Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings and head coach Brad Childress just showed their cards by benching quarterback Tarvaris Jackson for backup quarterback Gus Frerotte. This could be the right move but it was a panic move. Childress knows better than anyone because he wants to keep his job and quickly realized that if he stayed with Jackson as his starter he would eventually be fired. The Vikings play reasonably well but lost their opening game at Green Bay 24-19 and then blew a 15-0 lead late in the third quarter to the Indianapolis Colts before losing 18-15. The good news for the Vikings is that star running back Adrian Peterson has rushed for a combined 263 yards in two games but their leading receiver is tight end Garrett Mills who has three receptions for 49 yards and no touchdowns. The Vikings pass defense is giving up on average 237 yards per game and with upcoming games against Carolina, at Tennessee and at New Orleans there is a chance that this team could be 0-5 and done for the year.
Seattle Seahawks
Why did Mike Holmgren announce that he was going to retire and name Jim Mora Jr. as his successor? There was no need for this team to have that type of distraction heading into the season and with all of the injuries that have come at once, the Seahawks are in big trouble. They cannot run the ball and they have no receivers who can dominate a game. Signing Koren Robinson was a desperate move to bring back an often troubled player who might not have much left in the tank, but I agree with the move of trading a 5th round pick with Denver for receiver Keary Colbert. Matt Hasselbeck has a quarterback rating of 48.6 with only one touchdown after two games but that should improve as the Seahawks get to play St. Louis at Qwest field this Sunday. The much-needed bye comes in week four before a brutal stretch of games at the New York Giants, Green Bay and at Tampa Bay. A 1-5 record is possible for a team that was expected to once again win the weak NFC West.
Detroit Lions
What a disgrace. Matt Millen continues to keep his job as team president and chief executive and the Lions continue to disappoint their fans. The Lions are dead last in the NFL in rushing defense giving up 441 yards after two games. To put that in perspective Baltimore has give up 70. Jon Kitna is a solid quarterback and second year receiver Calvin Johnson has 236 receiving yards after two games but he cannot also play linebacker. They are soft up front on the defensive line and their secondary cannot tackle. This Sunday they play a must win game at San Francisco before they go back home to play division rival the Chicago Bears in week four. Head coach Rod Marinelli needs to calm his team down on defense and help them get off the field on third down or their explosive offensive will not get enough opportunities to win games.
St. Louis Rams
Let’s keep this very simple. Head coach Scott Linehan is about to lose his job and he knows it. I do not blame him for his team’s pathetic play on the field but he is terrible when it comes to dealing with the media. He tells reporters and television analysts that he is amazed that his veterans do not have leadership skills. Those comments do not help unite a locker room. Marc Bulger is a big disappointment at quarterback with only one touchdown, but he doesn't have enough quality receivers to get open down field or an offensive line to protect him. The off-season hold out of running back Steven Jackson hurt the chemistry of this team and they lack confidence and play with little to no emotion. The Rams defense ranks last in the NFL and has given up a total of 963 yards(327.5 passing yards per game) after two games and are on pace to be the worst statistical defense in the history of the NFL.
