Revised list of 'must see games' in 2008

After 'Game of the Year' went thud, it's time to rethink marquee matchups

On Sept. 25, USC will visit Oregon State. Carroll's Trojans lost to the Beavers the last time they went to Corvallis.

Hall Pass
It wasn’'t just that Max Hall threw for seven touchdown against UCLA on Saturday in BYU’s 59-0 win. It wasn’t just that by doing so he tied a school record held by former NFL quarterbacks Marc Wilson and Jim McMahon, or even that he did so with venerated ex-BYU offensive coordinator Norm Chow standing on the opposite sideline. It’s that when Hall threw his seventh touchdown pass, there was still 7:43 remaining in the third quarter.

Weber Grilled
Arizona State sophomore kicker Thomas Weber, the 2007 Lou Groza Award winner, trotted out to kick a game-tying field goal in overtime vs. UNLV on Saturday evening. Weber lined up at the 35-yard line, knowing that he had converted 31 of his first 32 collegiate field goals, including 7 of 7 already in 2008. The ball was snapped and Runnin’ Rebel lineman Malo Taumua blocked it for the season’s first shocking upset, in Tempe.

Paging Dr. Lou
Last week in this space we praised Cal sophomore tailback Jahvid Best, proclaiming him the most aptly named player in the nation after his 200-yard effort in his first start at Washington State. On Saturday at Maryland Best had just 25 yards on 10 carries and received a "Welcome to college" hit that left him resembling a freshman pledge after having plasyed one too many games of beer pong.

Nick Saban once again sees the glass half-shattered
Alabama beat Western Kentucky 41-7 on Saturday, holding the ball nearly 16 more minutes than the Hilltoppers. Afterward Tide coach Nick Saban said, ''I wish we wouldn't have kept the ball so long, because there were some defensive players we wanted to see a little more."

Not quite the Mountain Meadows Massacre, but still …
On Sept. 11, 1857, a Mormon militia slaughtered approximately 125 unarmed California-bound pioneers in a canyon in the Utah Territory. In the last two years, within four days of that anniversary, UCLA has lost at Utah and at BYU by a combined score of 103-6.

Auburn 3, Mississippi State 2
Not even Erin Andrews could have made that game watchable.

Cutcliffeville?
Do you realize that Duke is just one holding penalty away from being 3-0 at the moment? The Blue Devils beat Navy, 41-31, on Saturday to go 2-1 under new head coach David Cutcliffe. The two wins equal Duke’s win total of the past two seasons combined, and with 1-2 Virginia coming to Durham this weekend, well, how long until the Dookies start using the 4-letter word that begins with a "B"?

Buffalo Wild Wins
The best part of seeing Buffalo's game-winning "Hail Mary" pass over Temple last Saturday? Honestly, did you even have any idea what UB Stadium even looked like before this weekend? Neither did we.
