So what else do we know after Week 2? Or, to stand the question on its head, what don’t we know yet?
Things we don’t know yet:
What is Brett Favre worth to the Jets?
The old gunslinger was celebrated as if he were the second coming of Joe Namath when he led the Jets to a narrow victory over the Dolphins in Week 1. Miami, of course, were supposed to be much improved and a good test.
But the doormat Cardinals exposed the Dolphins as a bad football team, and Favre couldn’t match scores with a guy making his first start since high school. The Jets are 1-1. Probably the same Kellen Clemens or Chad Pennington would have been.
Are the Bills for real?
They followed up their whupping of Seattle in Week 1 with a 20-16 win over the struggling Jaguars in Jacksonville. Quarterback Trent Edwards was extremely efficient, completing 20 of 25 with one touchdown and no interceptions.
Next Sunday, the Bills get the dysfunctional Raiders, and in Week 4, it’s St. Louis followed by Arizona. Don’t get too excited, Bills fans, but you could be going into your Week 6 bye with a 5-0 record.
Are the Broncos ready for prime time?
Cutler made two mistakes that should have lost the game to the Chargers. But when the refs gave him a gift call, he took advantage of it and drilled a touchdown pass and then the two-point conversion that won the game.
Denver is either the darkhorse in the AFC or a pretender that’s going to get its comeuppance.
Is Vince Young’s injury the best thing to happen to the Titans?
With Young sidelined with a knee injury, veteran Kerry Collins led Tennessee to a 24-7 victory over Cincinnati to even the team’s record to 1-1. It could be taken as a promising sign.
But the other team is the Bengals, who seem bent on securing the top spot in next year’s draft. Let’s wait until the Titans play someone before making any decisions. Remember, there’s a reason Collins has played for so many teams during his career, and it’s not because he’s a great leader.
How about the Packers?
Aaron Rogers kept saying he was ready to take over for Favre. After throwing for 328 yards and three touchdowns against Detroit, it looks like he knew what he was talking about. It was Detroit, which is kind of like beating Cincinnati. But the Pack is 2-0, the Jets are 1-1, and Rogers is outplaying the legend.
Are the Steelers all the way back?
They didn’t light up the scoreboard against the Browns — make that the disappointing Browns — but howling winds had a lot to do with that. What should encourage Steeler fans is how well the defense is playing. It ate Cleveland alive on Sunday Night Football. And that’s how Pittsburgh wins — on defense.
