Guard Sam Cassell says he will become an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics after playing the 2008-09 season with the defending champions, according to the Baltimore Sun.
"This is my last year playing for the Celtics, the 38-year-old veteran told the newspaper. "Next week, I'll sign the contract."
Cassell said he plans to exercise an option in the new contract to join the coaching staff. Team spokesman Brian Olive declined to comment to the newspaper.
Cassell, a member of three title teams, averaged 6.7 points and 2.9 assists for the Celtics last season.
