Barcelona advances in Champions League
Juventus, Panathinaikos also move on to 32-team group stage

Barcelona, Juventus and Panathinaikos advanced to the 32-team group stage of the European Champions League on Tuesday night.
After winning 4-0 at home two weeks ago, Barcelona lost 1-0 at Poland’s Wisla Krakow and advanced on 5-1 aggregate in their home-and-home, third-round qualifying series. Juventus was held to a 1-1 tie at Slovakia’s Artmedia, getting a tying goal from Amauri in the 25th minute, and also advanced on 5-1 aggregate.
Panathinaikos beat visiting Sparta Prague 1-0 on an injury-time goal by Rodrigo Souza and won the series on 3-1 aggregate.
Thirteen more matches are scheduled for Wednesday. Five-time European champion Liverpool hosts Standard Liege after tying 0-0 in Belgium. Arsenal hosts the Netherlands’ Twente after winning 2-0 on the road.
England
Three Premier League teams, Bolton, West Bromwich and Hull were eliminated from England’s League Cup by lower-division opposition.
Bolton was upset 2-1 by Northampton, while West Brom lost 3-1 at Hartlepool and Swansea City rallied to oust Hull 2-1 in overtime.
Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Wigan and Stoke advanced into the third round.
Bolton’s hopes were ended by two goals in six minutes from Northampton striker Adebayo Akinfenwa. Kevin Nolan scored for Bolton with eight minutes remaining.
