TORONTO - Bryan McCabe's tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs is close to ending.
Citing undisclosed sources, TSN of Canada reported Thursday that the Maple Leafs have a deal in place that will send the defenseman to the Florida Panthers.
McCabe has a no-trade clause in his contract, but it is anticipated he will waive it once he receives the $2 million signing bonus owed to him by Toronto, TSN reported. The Maple
Leafs are expected to make the payment on September 1.
While the particulars of the trade are not yet known, Rogers Sportsnet is reporting Toronto will receive defenseman Mike Van Ryn from Florida in the deal.
The 33-year-old McCabe signed a five-year, $28.75 million contract with the Maple Leafs in June 2006. He is slated to make $12.45 million over the remaining three years of the deal.
After posting 57 points in 82 games in 2006-07, McCabe struggled last season, notching just five goals and 18 assists while appearing in only 54 contests. A second-round pick of the New York Islanders in 1993, the Ontario native has registered 115 tallies, 418 points and 1,574 penalty minutes in 917 career games with the Islanders, Vancouver Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks and Maple Leafs.
