Heavyweight prospect Brock Lesnar finally put Frank Mir in the rearview mirror, earning a dominating unanimous decision win over respected MMA veteran Heath Herring for his first UFC victory.
Lesnar rocked Herring with his first punch of the fight, a perfect right that sent the Texan falling to the canvas, but the durable PRIDE veteran recovered and took Lesnar the distance. By the end of the 15 minutes of action, however, Herring’s face was bloodied and bruised while Lesnar was unmarked.
As the final bell sounded, Lesnar pretended to lasso Herring to celebrate in front of his hometown crowd.
"I feel at home here," Lesnar said of the UFC octagon. "People move around in their careers, bounce around, and sometimes you feel lik you don't know where you're going. This is where I'm supposed to be."
Lesnar will give the UFC an interesting dilemma. At one point, Herring was close to a title shot, and Lesnar dominated him from start to finish. So it will be interesting to see how UFC matches him up next.
"I'm blown away," White said. "From the first punch on, he dominated. That first punch, you saw what it did to Herring's face. Someone around me said, 'It looks like Brock is hitting him with lunchboxes.' That's how big his hands are. It's unbelievable."
Minnesota’s Roger Huerta could not capitalize on the home-field advantage the way Lesnar did, as Kenny Florian ended Huerta's unbeaten octagon run with a decision victory.
Huerta’s fights tend to turn into brawls, but the ultra-disciplined Florian kept Huerta at a distance and got his offense off first when they got into striking range on most occasions. Twice, it appeared he had Huerta in big trouble after earning Huerta’s back, but the slippery opponent escaped.
Still, Florian put on a technical masterpiece, changing levels, utilizing a full range of weapons and even unleashing a few takedowns against the former wrestler in earning the unanimous decision.
"I wanted to circle, circle and then find my spots," Florian said. "He's the best I've seen him. He's a strong, powerful kid, and hits hard, but my footwork was a key."
"I give props to Kenny, he fought a very technical fight," Huerta said. "I was doing good things in the first, but then I went back to old habits. I started chasing him down. I got stubborn. He fought a smart fight."
In a grappling clinic, former jiu-jitsu world champ Demian Maia outlasted Jason MacDonald with a third-round rear naked choke.
MacDonald surprisingly decided to make the bout with the unbeaten Maia a ground war, and he survived a first-round triangle and some brutal second-round ground-and-pound before Maia took his back and finally sunk in the winning choke.
"It was very tough on the ground," Maia said. "I didn't think he was so tough, but he was. I was surprised he didn't want to use more standup."
With the win, Maia becomes an intriguing name in UFC’s middleweight division, unbeaten at 9-0 and with one of the few ground games in the weight class that can give champ Anderson Silva some problems. White, however, said he is still a few fights away from such a match.
Popular heavyweight Cheick Kongo overmatched Dan Evensen, scoring a first-round TKO.
The end came shortly after Kongo connected on a right flush to the jaw, dropping Evensen to the mat. Kongo (22-4) followed up with precision ground and pound before the referee called a stop to the action.
“Everybody knows I deserve a title shot,” Kongo said. “I want to be the best fighter in the world and I will show more than I did tonight when I get a title shot.”
In a light-heavyweight bout, Jon Jones, the youngest fighter in the UFC at just 21 years old, captured a unanimous decision over IFL veteran Andre Gusmao.
Stunningly, Jones, a former college wrestler, made his MMA debut just four months ago. Since that time, he’s been extremely active, with Saturday’s fight marking his sixth fight since April 12. Fighting on just three weeks notice, Jones controlled the action nearly from start to finish against Gusmao, utilizing his reach advantage to strike first from a distance. His offense was a bit unorthodox, as he threw many spinning backfists and back elbows.
Lightweight Rob Emerson had the knockout of the night, a spectacular 12-second finish over Manny Gamburyan.
Emerson landed a perfect right on the jaw that dropped his opponent, then finished him with a left hook that had Gamburyan’s head bounce off the canvas.
The other event awards went to Maia for submission of the night and St. Pierre and Fitch for fight of the night.
