I have always been respectful of the decisions and statements that Thompson, Murphy and McCarthy have made while having their backs against the wall. They never dreamed of being in a situation that is this uncomfortable and pits them against one of the greatest football players of all time. They have an obligation to their shareholders and fans first to try to win games while also making fiscally responsible decisions that will help the team prosper for years to come.
Once Favre finally filed for reinstatement with the NFL he looked forward to his return to Green Bay in the hopes of once again leading the Packers as their starting quarterback or forcing a trade to another team. Last Sunday he arrived by private jet in Green Bay and he and his wife looked as comfortable as a returning President and First Lady when walking off Air Force One.
Since Sunday night, Favre’s world has been rocked. He clearly understands that he is no longer wanted in Green Bay and his good friend and head coach Mike McCarthy stated that “the train has left the station.” He is still under contract for another three years with the Packers and now must decide between the New York Jets or Tampa Bay Buccaneers as his next team. I still believe that he wants to play for the Minnesota Vikings, stick it to his former employer, and beat them at least two times in 2008. This is all too bad for Brett and Deanna, because they no longer have the power to dictate their future unless they decide to retire again.
Despite all this, I continue to stand by my original assessment that Favre needs to play in Green Bay. He threw for 28 touchdowns and more than 4,000 yards, and gives the Packers their best chance of returning to the playoffs. Rogers has thrown one career touchdown and can't be expected to lead Green Bay to the playoffs. Many fans have forgotten the lean years in Green Bay before Favre and Reggie White came to Lambeau Field and helped the franchise turn back the clock to their glory days. Many of the great football fans who reside in Wisconsin or support the Packers from other parts of the country are now extremely disappointed with Favre's actions and wish that he stayed retired and rode off into the sunset. I respect everyone’s opinions that have called into my radio show and e-mailed to either support or bash Favre.
We will soon find out if Tampa Bay or New York wins the trade battle and lands one of the greatest football players of all time, but the damage to Favre’s short-term legacy has been done. He lost millions of fans in the past month has earned the title of “Greatest Sports Diva” in America.
