Timing is Ortiz's biggest concern July 18: David Ortiz is working on all elements of his game while rehabbing from an injury. |
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - David Ortiz homered for the third straight game during a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday night.
The Boston Red Sox slugger, who has been sidelined since May 30 because of a partially torn tendon sheath in his wrist, couldn’t help Pawtucket beat Toledo, as the Mud Hens won 13-5. Ortiz was 1-for-4 with the homer.
Toledo right-hander Chris Lambert, a native of Manchester, N.H., got Ortiz to lunge at a breaking pitch in the first inning and Boston’s All-Star designated hitter fouled out weakly to first baseman Derek Wathan.
Ortiz crushed a 3-1 fastball off the elevated billboard that’s located just to the right of the right-center field videoboard in the third.
Lambert fanned Ortiz on a 3-2 breaking ball in the fifth and left-hander Clay Rapado retried Ortiz on a checked-swing third strike in the seventh.
Ortiz is scheduled to play his last rehab game with Pawtucket on Sunday afternoon and then join Double-A Portland on Monday for three more games.
He is expected to return to the Red Sox for the home series with the Yankees on July 25.
Josh Hamilton fights off illness to hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning, lifting the Texas Rangers to an 8-7 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
SEATTLE (AP) - Albert Pujols hit a home run in his third straight game and pinch hitter Alberto Callaspo came through with a grand slam in the sixth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.
