Fedorov gets new deal with Capitals
Free agent had 13 points in 18 games after being dealt by Blue Jackets

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals agreed to terms with Sergei Fedorov for a one-year, $4 million contract and rewarded forward Brooks Laich’s career season with a three-year, $6.1 million deal on Wednesday.
Fedorov, the 1994 league MVP, was one of three trade deadline acquisitions that helped the Capitals end a five-year playoff drought last season. The 38-year-old center had 13 points in 18 regular-season games with Washington after being dealt by Columbus.
Fedorov also had five points in a seven-game first-round playoff series loss to Philadelphia.
The 25-year-old Laich had career highs in goals (21) and assists (16) last season and was one of four Capitals to play in all 82 games. He finished his third full NHL season with 12 goals and 20 points in the final 22 games as Washington made the run that clinched the Southeast Division.
Laich also had one goal and five assists in the series against Philadelphia.
Know mostly as a center, Laich said he has been working with a trainer three hours per day, six days a week, at his home in Saskatchewan to strengthen his legs because he expects to be playing more on the wing next season.
“I can’t wait to get back,” Laich said. “I love where we’re headed. The main reason I’m so excited is now I think we have a chance to win every day. We can win consistently and keep pushing the bar higher and higher, and we’re going to have more expectations when we come back to camp.”
Laich filed for salary arbitration earlier this week but agreed to a new deal before his case could be heard. He earned $725,000 last season. His new contract will pay him $1.7 million in 2008-09 next season and more than $2 million in each of the following two seasons.
