Mum on Michigan
Four-star dual-threat quarterback Kevin Newsome talked about a lot of things after the Elite 11 qualifier in Las Vegas this past weekend.

He talked about his performance. He talked about his transfer from Chesapeake (Va.) Western Branch to prep-school powerhouse Hargrave Military Academy this fall and how it will help him develop as a quarterback and a man. But the one thing he didn’t want to talk about was his commitment to Michigan.

“No comment,” Newsome said when he was asked about that commitment.

Newsome’s commitment has come into question of late. Close family friend Lew Johnston told The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk that other schools have continued to recruit Newsome, including Virginia Tech - the school he grew up rooting for in Virginia.

“I thought when he picked Michigan he jumped the gun a little bit, and I was disappointed,” Johnston told the newspaper. “I told him that. We’re very close, and I’ve told him I’d like to see him stay closer to home. I’m not going to push it, but there’s something about playing in your home state.”

Johnston apparently isn’t a big fan of Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez. Johnston said Newsome was told by Michigan that he would be “their guy,” then Michigan a few days later landed a commitment from four-star quarterback Shavodrick Beaver of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Etc.
• Two more spots at the Elite 11 have been filled. After strong performances this past weekend in Las Vegas, invitations have been handed out to UCLA commitment Richard Brehaut of Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos and Alabama pledge AJ McCarron of Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul’s. The camp will be held July 21-24 in southern California.

• Rutgers has been busy the past few days, landing commitments from Gerald Hodges, the nation’s No. 19 safety, and Logan Ryan, the nation’s No. 32 cornerback. Both are three-star prospects from New Jersey. Hodges is from Paulsboro High, and Ryan from Eastern High in Voorhees.

• Midland (Mich.) High wide receiver Drew Moulton never thought he’d have a shot at playing in the Big Ten until he played his senior season. Moulton, a 5-foot-11, 164-pounder, tore his ACL and missed his junior campaign. However, Moulton impressed enough last week at Northwestern’s camp to earn a scholarship offer. He quickly accepted.

• Kansas has continued to capitalize on last season’s Orange Bowl victory with a run of commitments. KU recently has added three offensive linemen to its commitment list – Ty Cloud of Flower Mound, Texas; Gavin Howard of Owasso, Okla.; and Riley Spencer of Hesston, Kan. KU coach Mark Mangino is an ace at spotting offensive linemen who develop into good players. KU also scored commitments from three-star quarterback Christian Matthews and three-star safety Dexter Linton, both from Arlington (Texas) Bowie.
