And who would have thought that Busch's victory would be greeted by cheers in lieu of the catcalls he usually hears? Busch believes Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s first victory in a Hendrick Motorsports car last week at Michigan may have helped.

"Maybe they're happy their guy won last week — they're over it," Busch said of Earnhardt's fans, whose ire he had raised by wrecking Earnhardt in the closing laps at Richmond in May.

Earnhardt, incidentally, fell one position short of matching his best finish (11th) in eight previous starts at Infineon, and he left the track with a firm hold on third place in the standings.

Busch, however, was the big winner, having expanded his cushion over second-place Jeff Burton to 103 points and his number of victories this season to five. If Busch wasn't the favorite to win the Chase heading to Infineon, the odds in his favor ought to be prohibitive as he leaves for New Hampshire, the next stop in the series.

He's that good, he's that adaptable and he's still learning.
