Pete Sampras vs. Patrick Rafter (2000)
In celebrating the start of the new century, the All England Club invited back the past Wimbledon singles and doubles winners for a parade of champions in 2000. Sixty-four players returned to participate, but three-time defending men's singles champion (and six-time champion overall) Pete Sampras wasn't one of them. He was too busy focusing on preparing for the tournament. His preparation paid off, as Sampras went on to win his record seventh singles title at Wimbledon and break Roy Emerson's Grand Slam singles title record with his 13th Slam victory. Persevering through painful tendonitis in his right shin that prevented him from training in between matches, Sampras went on to defeat Pat Rafter in four sets in the finals, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2.
