Virginia Wade's Wimbledon win (1977)
Causing the British public to erupt in joy, native-born Virginia Wade was a surprise champion at Wimbledon in 1977. Considered almost past her peak at the age of 31 and in her 16th Wimbledon, Wade proved to her detractors that she still had enough talent to top the field. After knocking off Chris Evert in the semifinals, Wade beat Betty Stove in three sets to win the title. What made Wade's victory even more special was that it was achieved in Wimbledon's centenary year and claimed in front of the Queen during her Silver Jubilee year. It was the last time a Brit captured the championship in either the men's singles or women's singles draw, and also the last time the Queen attended the Wimbledon Championships.
The United States completed a 5-0 rout of Switzerland in the Davis Cup on Sunday, with 19-year-old Ryan Harrison and John Isner winning closing singles matches.
