"Gorgeous" Gussie Moran's frilly knickers (1949)
When her request to wear a colored outfit at the All England Club in 1949 was turned down, Gertrude Moran, an American tennis player, found a way to express her outrage. Not only did she wear a dress that was shorter than normal, but she wore frilly knickers that were clearly visible. Wimbledon officials were irate, but she did make headlines.
