Pete Sampras vs. Jim Courier (1993)
In a final played on the Fourth of July, it was only fitting that the 1993 men's singles championship featured two Americans for the first time since 1984. Defending champion Pete Sampras, just 21 years old, faced off against good friend and No. 3 seed Jim Courier on Centre Court. Neither had a particularly easy trip to the finals, as Sampras was pushed to four sets in the first round and five sets in the quarterfinals, and Courier had three matches that went to four sets. Sampras won the first two sets in tiebreaks before Courier got on the board by taking the third set. But in the fourth set, with an aggressive serve that set up an easy backhand volley, Sampras claimed the championship.
