Strike (1973)
The conflict between the International Lawn Tennis Federation (then ITLP, now ITF) and the newly-formed Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) played itself out on the courts of Wimbledon in 1973. When the Yugoslav tennis federation's suspension of Nikola Pilic, which prevented him from playing at Wimbledon, was supported by the ITF, 81 of the top players -- including 13 of the original 16 seeds -- boycotted the event. Players who remained were Roger Taylor, a Brit who figured to have a strong shot at the title in the absence of other competitors, Ilie Nastase, who said he was under orders from the Romanian authorities to participate, Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg, non-ATP players, and competitors for "Iron Curtain" countries. Nastase, the runner-up in 1972 and top seed in 1973, was upset in the fourth round, and Jan Kodes ultimately won.
