Never one to keep his emotions in check on the golf course, John Daly exploded in the final round of the 1999 U.S. Open. Frustrated over two putts that failed to remain on the mounded greens of the par-4 eighth hole at Pinehurst, he struck his ball while it was still moving, earning a two-stroke penalty and finishing with an 11. Although he did complete the round, he promised never to return to the event, saying "It's not worth it. This is my last U.S. Open -- ever. I've had it with the USGA and the way they run their tournaments. The USGA loves to embarrass guys who play in their tournaments." He did, however, return the next year, although he withdrew from the tournament after shooting a 12-over 83 in the first round.
